724 Internet Solutions email configuration changes effective 3/20/03.

Effective Thursday, March 20th, 2003, at 12:01am, we have changed the way e-mail is sent

through the 724 Hosting email server. All e-mail now requires "SMTP Authentication" be enabled
to send email. This change was made because of a security hole in our email server which allowed,
under certain conditions, a spammer to use our email server to send their bulk email.

Below are the instructions for modifying your existing email accounts for Outlook, Outlook Express,
MAC Mail and Eudora Mail
. If you do not any of these mail clients, then consult your email clients
documentation under the heading (Enabling SMTP Authentication).

Instructions for Outlook Express

1. Open Outlook Express.

2. Click <TOOLS>, and then <ACCOUNTS>

3. Highlight the email account you want to modify from the email address list and click the

<PROPERTIES> button to the right of the email addresses list.

4. Select the Tab at the top labeled <SERVERS>.

5. Click the box at the bottom that reads <MY SERVER REQUIRES AUTHENTICATION>.

6.Click <OK> at the bottom of the page.

7. Repeat the procedure for the remaining email accounts.

8. Click <CLOSE> when you are done modifying all email accounts.

Instructions for Outlook 2002 and Outlook XP

1. Open Outlook

2. Click <TOOLS>, and then <E-MAIL ACCOUNTS>

3. Under the Email heading, select the BULLET to <VIEW OR CHANGE EXISTING E-MAIL ACCOUNTS>

and then click <NEXT>

4. Highlight the email account you want to modify from the email address list and click the

<CHANGE> button to the right of the email addresses list.

5. Click the <MORE SETTINGS> button.

6. Select the Tab at the top labeled <OUTGOING SERVER>.

7. Click the box that says <MY OUTGOING SERVER (SMTP) REQUIRES AUTHENTICATION>.

8. By default, the BULLET is selected to "Use same settings as my incoming mail server". If

this is not selected, then select this now.

9.Click <OK> at the bottom of the page.

10. Click <NEXT>.

11. Repeat the procedure for the remaining email accounts.

12. Click <FINISH> when you are done modifying all email accounts.

Using the 724 Hosting SMTP server for Apple MAC Mail (version OS x)

1. Open Mail.
2. Choose Preferences from the Mail menu.
3. Click Accounts, then double-click the email account to modify.
4. Verify the name in the SMTP Host field to “mail.724hosting.com”.
5. Click the checkbox to turn on the "Use authentication when sending mail" feature.
6. Click OK.
If this does not work, then your ISP is blocking SMTP Authentication. In this case, try using your
ISP’s mail server for the SMTP server in step 4 above.

Eudora mail (from Eudora's FAQ at http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1637hq.html)

Eudora 4.3 and higher support SMTP Authentication. We support the CRAM-MD5, PLAIN, and LOGIN
encryption methods for SMTP Authentication. It is turned on by default in Eudora.

To toggle the setting, go to Tools: Options: Getting Started: and toggle the setting "Allow Authentication".
You can also do this for your personalities under Tools: Personalities.

All Other Email clients.

Please refer to your documentation for any other email client you are using.

Look up "Enabling SMTP Authentication" in the documentation and follow those instructions.

IN CASE OF CONTINUED PROBLEMS WHERE THE ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS DO NOT WORK.

If all else fails, it could be that either your ISP or your firewall is blocking advanced SMTP commands. I have provided a solution below you can use to test if this is the problem.

How to test if an ISP or if a firewall is blocking SMTP Authentication.

These are the steps.

1. Open a command or DOS prompt. Click <start>, <programs>, <accessories> <command prompt>

2. Type this command :  telnet 64.239.149.125 25  (note there is a space before the 25)

3. You should see : 220 mail.724hosting.com (IMail 7.13 42435-4) NT-ESMTP Server X1) displayed on the screen.

3. Now type EHLO mail.724hosting.com
(note: that you will not be able to see what you are typing as it will appear that the command prompt is in a hung state.) Go ahead and type the command anyways.

NORMAL RESPONSE #1 (this is what should be seen if the connection is good and working)

220 mail.724hosting.com (IMail 7.13 42435-4) NT-ESMTP Server X1
250-mail.724hosting.com says hello
250-SIZE 0
250-8BITMIME
250-DSN
250-ETRN
250-
AUTH LOGIN CRAM-MD5
250-
AUTH=LOGIN
250 EXPN

PROBLEM RESPONSE 2:

220************************************************
EHLO mail.724hosting.com
220 Mail Action Taken

EXPLANATION 2:

This is typically a firewall that is filtering the responses from the server

PROBLEM RESPONSE 3:

220 mail.724hosting.com
EHLO mail.724hosting.com
Unrecognized command

EXPLANATION 3:

This is a firewall that will not pass the EHLO

In either of these cases, you will need to open your firewall to allow these commands.
